Yesterday I replaced the RapidJSON in Project Special K with the SimpleJSON I already had in another C++ toy project, after discovering a somewhat simpler variation on JSON patch formats (RFC 7396 JSON Merge Patch opposed to 6902 JSON Patch) but found that the way RapidJSON worked made it next to impossible for me to implement.

I got walled by adding/replacing into arrays and 7396 doesn't support such an operation to begin with so that would simplify the job as well as the patch files.

Now, RFC 8396 does not require 6901 JSON Pointer, unlike 6902, support for which came free with RapidJSON. But why did I use RapidJSON in the first place? Because glTF importing requires JSON and lazy-gltf2 uses RapidJSON specifically.

I could use assimp instead I guess but that seems way overkill?

So I spent last night adapting everything to use SimpleJSON, added RFC 7396 support (though "remove if value is null" is missing right now) and got back to the point where I left off before.

Now I have some choices to consider.

Rework lazy-gltf2 to use SimpleJSON instead of RapidJSON. May find out there's no pointer support and lazy-gltf2 requires it.

Use assimp, end up with an external dependency that carries its own JSON parser but is also way too much for what I need.

Stop using C++, go back to C#, and find out that all the glTF importers available out there are all meant for VS2019 or later and won't compile on 2015, and/or use Newtonsoft JSON while I have a perfectly good library of my implementation right here with passable pointer and patch support.

Stop using C++, go back to C#, write my own glTF importer bound to my own JSON library.

Give the fuck up.

One of the best stories I have from my loonng life is about receiving a sign from the universe that even I couldn’t doubt.

I was working on a project moving a huge library - 6 miles of material, 20 million items. Things were not going well. I was probably the closest I have ever been to having a nervous breakdown. “How am I going to make it all fit?” “What if I just can’t make it fit?” were on an almost continuous loop in my head. Each night I let myself reread a bit of Phillip K. Dick’s VALIS before going to sleep. Horselover Fat was experiencing either a nervous breakdown or some kind of break from reality, and I could relate.

One morning I’m crossing the street on my way to work, thinking again “how the hell am I going to make this happen?” when I glance at the custom license plate of the SUV stopped right at the crosswalk. It says ANANKE, an Ancient Greek word that means blind necessity, that which MUST happen. It’s the portion of fate that even the gods do not have the power to change. I genuinely thought I was hallucinating. I stayed in the middle of the road to see the license plate on the back of the SUV, which most definitely read ANANKE.

I wouldn’t have remembered what ANANKE meant if I hadn’t been rereading VALIS. I wouldn’t have seen the plates if I hadn’t been there at just the right time and the SUV hadn’t been the first car stopped at the light. WHO THE FUCK ORDERS A CUSTOM LICENSE PLATE WITH AN ANCIENT GREEK WORD ON IT???!! And not a fun one!

I decided the astronomical improbability of it all clearly meant that it had to be a sign. ANANKE, that which must be done. The library would be moved, and would fit, because there was simply no room in the universe for any other outcome. And in the end, it all fit.

Since then I’ve had slightly more faith that there is some kind of order to the universe, because it certainly seemed to have crystallized that day for me.

yesterday I went to a little meeting at my local queer community center and I was admiring their bookshelves and mentioned that I work at the public library and someone said "well I bet they don't have any [LGBTQ+ books] at our library" and I was like um. yes we do. we have tons of them. half of our employees are queer leftists so they said "oh well I bet they don't in [nearby rural county]" and I was like uh once again yes they absolutely do. gay people live and work there as well

so here's a quick reminder that if you don't think your local library has enough queer centered materials you should actually check before assuming, and if you're not satisfied with their collection you should submit a request for more such books. I don't know what the political landscape of libraries looks like outside the us rn, but within the us no matter where you are, I promise you there are employees at your library fighting for inclusion and intellectual freedom and they can't win without vocal public support

im afraid i may have i classically conditioned myself. i have a space heater in my room, the kind that makes fan noise when i turn it on. i think ive come to associate that sound with being warm, because i recently got a mini fridge that also makes fan noise, and now i keep feeling hot even though its the same temperature its always been (which is usually cold for me). my fridge makes me warm. thats all backwards. damn you pavlov.
